POLAC, short for the Nigeria Police Academy, is a renowned university with a rich history that dates back to the early 1980s.
Its establishment was the result of a request made by the Nigerian Government to the British Government in 1981.
The Nigerian Government sought assistance from the United Kingdom to address the training needs of the Nigeria Police.
In response, a team of three British Police Officers, led by ‘M.A. H Pacy,’ was sent to Nigeria by the British Government.
In 1982, this team submitted their findings, known as “the Pacy report,” to the Nigerian Government. The report was subsequently published as the white paper on the future training needs of the Nigeria Police Force.
Based on the recommendations of the Pacy report, the Nigerian Inspector General of Police at the time, Alhaji Mohammed A Gambo, dispatched a team of three Nigerian Police Officers, headed by the Late Assistant Inspector General (AIG) S.Z Daura, to Egypt. Their mission was to study and analyze the Egyptian Nigeria Police Academy.
The research conducted by the Nigerian team, combined with the insights from the Pacy report, played a crucial role in the establishment of what is now known as the Nigeria Police Academy, Kano.
The primary objective of this institution was to provide top-notch training to Police Officers, enabling them to achieve the highest standards of professionalism.
In 1988, the Nigeria Police Academy commenced operations at two temporary campuses simultaneously.
The Police Training School in Challawa, Kano, served as a training facility for cadet inspectors, while the Police College in Kaduna conducted the training of Cadet ASPs (Assistant Superintendent of Police).
It wasn’t until April 2, 1996, that the two institutions merged and relocated to their permanent site in Wudil, Kano State. The relocation was officially commissioned by the then Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, General Sanni Abacha, GCON, dss, mni.
At present, the Nigeria Police Academy is under the leadership of Assistant Inspector General of Police, Ahmad Abdurrahman, psc (+), mni, serving as the Commandant.
The establishment of POLAC aimed to address the personnel deficiencies within the Nigeria Police Force by producing high-quality manpower, particularly at the middle level, such as ASPs and the Inspectorate Cadre.
The academy’s mission is to equip trainees and students with the necessary competencies, rooted in solid academic foundations, high moral standards, and professionalism, to enhance effective law enforcement and service to the nation.
Note: It is important to note that there are no school fees required for students studying at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil. The Federal Government bears the cost of tuition for the students.
